Reflections on Speak Up Week 2024

With Speak Up Week drawing to a close, we wanted to reflect on some of the content shared by INWO and NHS Boards across Scotland.

Webinars

During the webinars NHS colleagues reflected on the role of good leadership, psychological safety and understanding the experiences of all those involved in the whistleblowing procedure.

These were all found to be key ingredients for creating a healthy speak up culture in which all staff feel safe and empowered to speak up.

Around 400 people joined the live events, asking questions, sharing tips and discussing the topics.

Personal stories

Key to speaking up is listening up.

Our film ‘Annie’s Story’ shared the experience of a former NHS Nurse, Annie Norman, who spoke up back in 2010 but was not listened to. The film highlights the harm this can cause, and why there are reasons to be more optimistic about where we are today.

Current challenges faced by NHS must be acknowledged too. We shared an interview with Alison Weir, a GP Practice Manager about the challenge of speaking up in primary care.

A guest blog by Iain Kennedy, a GP from Inverness, about the additional barriers faced by colleagues from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Content from across the country

Health boards across Scotland have been hosting their own events and getting involved.

From sharing good practice ideas and podcast recommendations to pledges on camera, people have engaged with various topics in meaningful ways. See our socials for a montage of the pledges

Neil Gray MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Wellbeing Economy, Fair Work and Energy also shared his own thoughts and supported the Speak Up Week campaign.

Thank you

We want to thank everyone involved in the week for sharing their stories, reposting content and taking part in the events.

It is not too late to catch up. If you missed out on anything mentioned above, please visit our INWO webpage: Speak Up Week.

Speak Up Week may be over but the need to promote continuous learning and improve is not.
