Learning from INWO cases

Three people around a whiteboard

This month, the INWO is publishing a report on the investigation into the handling of a concern raised about a board’s discharge planning process.

The INWO did not uphold the complaint and provided a lot of positive feedback to the board about their complaints handling and investigation. Here is what the board did well that we can all learn from

  • the whistleblowing file was well organised and accessible

  • the Board's correspondence with the whistleblower explained the whistleblowing process, outlined their options and provided signposting for support

  • the Board used checklists to identify the most appropriate investigator, which resulted in a thorough and well thought out investigation.  This was because the investigator selected had expert knowledge, and knew exactly what to look into

  • having been notified of our investigation, the INWO Liaison Officer took a lot of time at the start of the process to ensure they understood what information was being asked for, helping to speed up the INWO’s investigation.
